Dearest Dad/Poppie,
We are so sorry that we weren't there to say goodbye.
We had no idea that you were sick or that you had left us.
We happen to hear from someone of your passing and then it was too late. Again, we are so sorry that we couldn't hug you one last time. We will meet up with you again someday.
